From October 19 to November 27, 2025, the Corner MAXXI will host for the first time Chris Soal, one of the most influential South African artists on the contemporary scene, with Spillovers: Notes on a Phenomenological Ecology, an unprecedented collection of site-specific works that intertwine sculpture, biology, and ecology. A flow of forms, materials, and perceptions leads to a journey into the heart of matter, where the everyday and the discarded are transformed into complex and vital visions.
Curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and produced by the D’ARC Foundation in collaboration with Piero Atchugarry Gallery (Miami–Pueblo Garzón) and Montoro12 Gallery (Brussels–Rome), the exhibition guides visitors through a creative process defined by the concept of spillover: a term that refers to the phenomenon of “overflow.” The materials overflow, surpassing their original function and becoming something else. Perception overflows, called to transcend categories and boundaries. The imagination overflows, shifting from the inorganic to the biological, evoking proliferating cellular forms, geological layers accumulating over time, and organisms multiplying through space.
